Sr Terriers Will Open Spring Training Vs The University Of Tampa Spartans
Submitted By Dan Thompson on Monday, December 20, 2010
After months of indoor workouts at The Baseball Zone, and an outdoor practice at 4pm on March 10th in Tampa, the SR Terriers will open their 2011 schedule versus the University of Tampa JV Spartans at 3pm on March 11th. The SRs will also close out their spring break trip on March 16th with a DH against Tampa at historic Al Lang Stadium in downtown St. Petersburg. The Spartans are a powerhouse in the NCAA's Sunshine State Conference (SSC).

They were last years SSC champions with a 21-3 record, and were 46-11 overall. The Spartans also had a staggering nine players selected in the 2010 MLB draft! In all, the University of Tampa has graduated 84 players to professional baseball including big leaguers Lou Piniella, Tino Martinez, Jeff Carter and Charlie Manning. Games against this type of opponent provides Terriers players with outstanding competition and exposure to one of the best NCAA university baseball programs in the United States. The Terriers organization is extremely grateful to Spartans Head Coach Mark Johnson for this tremendous opportunity. All three Terriers teams will be making the trip south over March break. The 16u and 17u teams will each play nine games versus US high school and travel teams. They will also practice every other day. The SR Terriers will play a very challenging ten games versus US college teams. About Al Lang Stadium... * The 7,227 seat baseball stadium is located on the waterfront in downtown St.Peterburg, Florida * It was the spring training home of the New York Yankees from 1923 until after World War II. * Played host to countless baseball legends, including Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig and Stan Musial.
