Ben Abram Leads Canada Over Japan
The 18U World Cup of Baseball is currently being played in Thunder Bay Ontario.
After advancing to the Super Round from regular round robin play, Canada faced Japan and Terriers RHP Ben Abram got the call to start in a do or die game with medal hopes on the line. Quoting Team Canada Manager Greg Hamilton, "We needed some innings from Ben tonight and he delivered".
Ben struck out three, walked two and allowed just two earned runs.
He pitched into the fifth inning. He was masterful in the fourth inning when he worked his way out of trouble after an error, single and sac bunt that put runners at second and third with one out. Ben induced a Japanese batter to hit a chopper that nabbed the runner from third at home, then got a ground ball to end the rally.
Ben left the game leading 3-2 and Canada eventually came away with a 6-4 victory.
The win has guaranteed Canada a spot in the final four. They will play Cuba on Saturday before playing for a medal on Sunday at Port Arthur Stadium in Thunder Bay.
